The Importance of Hot Melt Glue Gun Nozzle Selection

Importance of nozzles
The hot melt adhesive
nozzle and the pump pressure of the hot melt adhesive machinetogether determine the amount of hot melt adhesive sprayed onto the product. Therefore, it not only affects the operating costs but also the product quality. Choosing the right and appropriate nozzle is also a part of ensuring the efficient operation of the company in daily production, which should not be ignored.
Factors that influence nozzle selection
Each product or specification has different requirements for the quality of adhesive application.
For example, a carton primary packaging only requires a small strip of hot melt adhesive, and the hot melt adhesive machineand nozzle need to achieve high-precision glue cutting without drawing.
Transport packaging made of corrugated cardboard is completely different. In this case, long strips of hot melt adhesive need to be sprayed to ensure that the carton can still be firmly bonded under the effect of curing. The quality of glue cutting is secondary.
Which parameters does the nozzle take care of?
During the glue application process, the nozzle is responsible for the following parameters:
1. The amount of hot melt adhesive applied per strip or point
2. The sharpness of the hot melt adhesive cut-off
The interaction between the nozzle diameter shape and the channel length is very complex.
However, the following rules of thumb can be used as a guide :
✔ The smaller the amount of glue applied, the more precise the adhesive cut-off.
✔ The better the heat transfer effect of the nozzle geometry and the shorter the nozzle channel, the sharper the adhesive cut-off.
✔ The nozzle length determines how far away from the substrate the spray gun can be positioned.
Symptoms of an incorrectly installed nozzle
Quality issues such as stringing, too much or too little hot melt on the substrate are common.
The principle is that too little hot melt results in insufficient adhesion and thus scrap. However, applying too much hot melt also jeopardizes the bond, because the curing time increases with the amount of hot melt.
As a result, nozzle diameter, amount of hot melt applied, open time and pressing time are no longer optimally coordinated.
All in all, this situation has a negative impact on operating costs, because scrap and hot melt are both cost drivers.
