Hot Melt Adhesive Overview

Hot melt adhesive
is a plastic adhesive. Its physical state changes with temperature within a certain temperature range, but its chemical properties remain unchanged. It is non-toxic and tasteless, and is an environmentally friendly chemical product. It is popular because the product itself is solid, easy to package, transport, store, solvent-free, pollution-free, non-toxic; and has the advantages of simple production process, high added value, high bonding strength, and fast speed.

Nowadays, hot melt adhesives have been widely used in industries such as medical protective products, daily hygiene products, automated packaging, tape labels, electronic appliances, automotive interiors, and home appliance assembly.

For example, the nose bridge on medical masks is connected and fixed to the non-woven surface layer using hot melt adhesive; the material composite of disposable protective clothing and medical mattresses also uses hot melt adhesive; the lid of disinfectant wipes is also bonded and fixed using hot melt adhesive.

Application cases

1. Bonding of mask beams

There are many types of masks, but all of them have nose bridge strips, which are used to fix the mask on the nose bridge, effectively isolate the virus, and ensure smooth exhalation. Most nose bridge strips are thin aluminum strips, which have a certain strength, but are also easy to bend, making it convenient to wear masks. Hot melt adhesive is first applied on the aluminum plate, then cut into nose bridge strips, and then pasted on the mask production line.

2. Waterstop for medical protective clothing

The production of medical protective clothing mainly uses equipment such as flat sewing machines, overlock machines and glue presses to cut, splice, fasten, and glue the non-woven fabrics that meet the requirements. After “three repellents and one anti-” (water repellent, blood repellent, alcohol repellent, and anti-static) functional finishing, medical protective clothing containing hooded tops and pants is made.

3. Composite materials for disposable protective clothing

Hot melt adhesive is used in the composite of PE breathable film and water-repellent non-woven fabric, and the bonding strength is required to achieve the effect of breaking both materials. Some medical protective clothing with higher requirements will use PUR hot melt adhesive.

4. Composite materials of disposable protective mattresses

The composite materials of protective mattresses are similar to those of protective clothing. Hot melt adhesive is used in the composite materials of PE breathable film and water-repellent non-woven fabric, and the bonding strength is required to achieve the effect of breaking the materials on both sides.

5. Hot melt adhesive for disinfectant wipes cover

Disinfectant wipes play an important role in eliminating viruses and reducing infection. However, the bonding problem of disinfectant wipes cover is the bonding of hard ABS cover and soft PET and PP film (difficult-to-bond materials). It requires strong bonding force, sufficient strength at low temperatures, and resistance to certain high temperatures (in container transportation). Hot melt adhesive solves this problem well because of its fast curing and excellent bonding force.
